Create your first list

There are three ways to start a list: describe it and let Nelly write it, make a blank one yourself, or, on iPhone, scan a list you've already written. Once the list exists, adding items is just typing and pressing Return.

Your very first list

A brand-new account opens on Create with Nelly. Describe the list in plain words, or tap one of the ideas underneath, then tap Create my list and Nelly builds it while you watch. See Create a list with Nelly.

Rather type your own? Tap Start with a blank list under the field. Anything you'd already typed comes along as the list's name.

Every list after that

Tap the + at the bottom right of My Lists and pick one:

1. Create with Nelly: describe the list you want.
2. Create a new list: a name, a type, an icon and a color, then add items yourself. See Make a list yourself.
3. Scan a list to create it: iPhone only. Photograph a paper list and each line becomes an item. See Scan a paper list (iPhone).

Add your first items

Tap the field at the top of the list (it says something like Add an item…), type, and press Return. The item joins the list and the field stays open for the next one. Type milk, eggs, bread and you get three separate items. More shortcuts in Add items quickly.

To-dos, Items or Ranked?

Every list has a type, chosen when you make it:

• To-dos are things to check off. They get check circles, a progress count, and can carry dates and reminders.
• Items are things to remember, like films, gifts or places, shown with a simple bullet.
• Ranked lists keep things in order, numbered by where you drag them.

You can also rename what the list's entries are called ("Exercises", "Ingredients", "To buy") so the app speaks your language. Every option is explained in Make a list yourself.

Make it yours

• Pick an icon and an accent color so the list is easy to spot.
• Pin the lists you use most and file lists under labels like "Home" or "Work". See Pin, label and archive lists.
• Archive a list you're done with. It leaves My Lists but keeps everything, and you can bring it back any time.

Don't fear the delete

Deleting a list or items always offers Undo for a few seconds, and nothing leaves your account until that window has passed. More in Get back something you deleted.

FAQ

Do I need Nelly to make a list?

No. Create a new list makes a blank list you fill in yourself, and it never touches your Nelly allowance.

Can I change a list's type later?

Yes, if it's your list. Open it, tap ⋯, then Edit list details, and choose a different List Type.

Why don't I see Scan a list to create it?

Scanning uses your iPhone's own text recognition, so it's only in the iPhone app, not on the web.
