Locked Lists
Members can always check items off. Adding, editing and removing items, and seeing dates, start off; switch them on under Member rules whenever you like.
However you start a Live List, it begins locked: members can see it and tick things off, but they can't change what you wrote. That's deliberate, because the common case is showing people a list you've made, not handing them the pen. If you want a list everyone builds together, switching more on takes a moment.
Change what members can do
- Open the list and tap the lightning bolt.
- Tap Member rules.
- Switch each rule on or off. It takes effect for members straight away.
You also set these when you first make the list live, on Choose what members can do. The Invite someone shortcut after Nelly makes a list skips that screen, and the list starts with the rules below. None of them applies to you, the owner.
Member rules always shows what's in force right now, so what you see there is exactly what members can and can't do.
What each switch does
- Add items: add new items to the list. Off to start.
- Edit items: change titles, dates, links, photos and the checklists inside items. Off to start.
- Remove items: delete items from the list. Off to start.
- See dates and reminders: due dates, times and reminders show on items. Off to start, since they're usually your own scheduling and mean nothing to someone else.
- See notes: read and write notes on items. On to start.
Whatever you switch on, only you can change the list's name, groups and schedule.
What's never locked
- Checking off. Members can always check items off, because that's what the list is for. (Rows in a checklist inside an item follow Edit items, see Add a checklist inside an item.) In select mode a member on a locked list can still select items to complete them; only moving and deleting are held back.
- Notes. While See notes is on, members can write notes even on a fully locked list. Notes are where a Live List comes alive ("seen it, loved it"), so they answer only to See notes, never to Edit items.
What members see
With Add items off, members see Only the owner can add to this list. where the add field would be, and they can dismiss it. Anything else that's switched off simply isn't offered to them.
FAQ
Can a member delete my list?
No, whatever the rules say. Only the owner can delete a Live List. Members can leave it instead. See Leave a Live List.
Can I let one person edit but not another?
No. Member rules apply to everyone on the list except you.
Will members see my due dates and reminders?
Only if you switch on See dates and reminders. It starts off, so a new Live List shows members the items without your scheduling. A copy a member shares on from the list (Share a copy) leaves hidden dates and hidden notes out too.
